The Velvet Room exists between the consciousness and subconsciousness. It is inaccessible by characters who do not wield a Persona or have lost their Persona for various different reasons. In fact, its entire existence is limited only to Persona users and to the regular individual, they will not be able to even see the entrance to the room. Although it is stationed primarily in the castle, the entrance of the Velvet Room may also be found in various different locations, such as by the dungeons and the shrine. Sometimes, there may be a "malfunction" and an ordinary door will actually lead into the Velvet Room. Why does that happen? Well... perhaps characters will have to ask the attendants for that answer.

Within the room, two attendants occupy the space. These attendants act as guides and will perform various different duties in order to assist the characters. They will pass on plot information, answer questions, give out requests (with the promise of a reward, of course), forge magic-infused weapons, heal, and such on. Requests, in particular, are given out ICly and OOCly monthly and may be undertaken by any character who wishes to complete them. Please see the first toplevel of this entry for more information.

The attendants may be regularly contacted by entering the Velvet Room and, as a result, players may comment to this entry to interact with either attendant. Players may specify which attendant that they'd like to interact with or allow the mods to choose. These threads may be used towards AC and bonus activity. However, due to the attention-intensive nature of NPC threads, these threads may be quickly wrapped up in order to save time for the mods.

🢒🢒 minato The attendant you might have to wake up, pretending to be asleep so you have to bother Souji instead of him. His requests tend towards what he wants to do or eat at the moment, but he seems to enjoy seeing the world, though he isn't always good company. Seriously. Go bother Souji instead.

🢒🢒 souji The more talkative attendant between the two, though he could say some pretty bizarre things. He also seems overly fond of cats for some reason and will unironically go "nya". His requests normally seem to involve taking him out somewhere or bringing him particularly... strange objects.

[ Even in the days he'd been gone, the majority of them had been spent sleeping. Here in the conductor's cab, he'd come back and sat down on the seat and stared out the window into the sea of nothingness outside, then closed his eyes and the view isn't much different.

He lets his eyes flutter open again when he feels the poke on his arm, and spins around in his seat to look at Rio. It's the sort of chair that'll spin back into position facing forward on its own, so he locks a foot behind a wheel to keep that from happening. ]

Mm... yeah.

[ He sure is going to sleep. ]

I just had a few questions, if you think you can stay awake for it.

[Though her voice is lacking in much energy or humor.]

[ Has he ever fallen asleep in the middle of a conversation? He doesn't think so... he's been tempted to several times, though. ]

I think so. Do you want to talk in your room, or...?

[ Unlike the lounge, there's really only one seat unless Rio wants to sit on top of the dashboard that doesn't do anything. ]

It'll probably be quick, so it doesn't really matter.

[She's not entirely sure how much of it ever did.]

Is my main use here my capability for violence?

[She's used to combat, and will throw herself into fighting if it's needed. Maybe a little too easily, she's realizing.]

[ Minato lets the chair spin forward slightly, before using his foot to turn back. A small, useless motion that keeps the rest of him occupied while he looks at Rio. ]

No.

[ There's no hesitation behind his answer, but it's just... no. He'd have to think about what her main use is, if that's going to be her follow-up question. ]

Everybody's capable of violence.

[ Look at him and what he's done. ]

That may be true, but I'm a unique situation even then, right?

[It's what she was born for. It's her purpose, even if she's trying to throw off those shackles - and failing at it, apparently.]

Enough to liken me to a monster.

Are you upset I said that?

[ He doesn't take it back... He'd told her he likes monsters, and doesn't think his words make enough of an impact to stick like that. Ultimately, his opinions aren't important enough to do that, or they shouldn't be. ]

Souji and I... we're not forcing you to do anything. You can do what you want, for the most part. Your use is what you choose to do, isn't it?

[toybombs]

Well, it's something I already knew about myself.

[So no, not really. It just kind of confirmed her own thoughts on the matter.]

Even when I think I'm holding back, it always comes back to violence. It's just part of my nature, even if I'm trying to change it.

[And truthfully, she knows there's a great likelihood that she won't be able to ever beat it entirely. Not on her own.

If only she could have been saved...]

...Okay.

[ Minato thinks about Terry, who is... Terry. But also Kido whose temper flares at the smallest thing. Jiro can get snappy too, but usually just with his words. Ellie's always ready to rumble. In Minato's opinion, Rio fits right in. ]

Isn't that fine? To be violent sometimes, and not other times?

[toybombs]

[She just gives a soft sigh.]

No, it's not. If I let myself relish in violence too much, I'll lose myself to it. And if that happens, it won't matter who or what I kill anymore, as long as I'm killing.

I wouldn't even be a cool monster anymore. Just a monster.

[compendiem]

[ "You'll always be a cool monster in my heart," Minato doesn't say. ]

So it's like a self-discipline thing...? If everything here was just... peaceful living... then you wouldn't have anything to fight about or kill over. Something like that?

[ There must be world peace in order to save Rio. ]

[She shakes her head with a frown, voice lowering.]

Like I said, killing is why I was born. Even if everything was peaceful, I'd still subconsciously enjoy violence and killing. That's why it's so dangerous...

I know I can't solve everything by killing. But a part of me will always want to. Because I was born to eliminate humans.

[ This is a really stupid question and Minato knows it, but he has to ask anyways: ]

Is playing video games no good for scratching that itch?

[toybombs]

If it were that simple, we wouldn't be killing and being slaughtered as killers or killers-to-be.

[Nice try though, Minato.]

[ Yeah, it figures. Talking to Minato probably isn't doing Rio any favors either, in terms of violent urges. ]

At least in this place, while you're here, you don't have to be worried about being killed for that sort of thing...

[ Other things, maybe. But not for this reason. So it's the other half of the problem, the urge to kill... ]

Is it better or worse when you're out there with everybody? People you talk to and are friends with...

[It's fine, she's used to the same lowkey feeling of m u r d e r all the time.]

If it weren't people, it would be animals. That's how complete it is.

[Someone she knows well learned piano because he was chained to one after he killed the family dog. It's that kind of situation.]

[ Oh. Souji would get upset with him if Minato lets it get to the point where Rio's killing Souji's cats. ]

And if not animals, then Shadows?

[ Is that how Rio's been getting by all this time? That makes it hard to tell between scratching the urge, and willingly denying it. Unless she's been killing townspeople off to the side like Terry. ]

Anything that can be killed... There's always at least a passing urge.

But I can control it. I fight when I have to, but I can go for years without killing. It's not enough to save me from losing myself once I become of age, but... It's enough to keep myself now.

But looking back, I was probably too quick to jump to killing Shadows and the Daitengu. Even if we decided to kill them after all, he was right- I never questioned it.

[It's a weak point in her self-control, and it's distressing how easily she had convinced herself she was doing well enough when it's entirely possible she wasn't at all.]

You aren't the only one who never questioned it. I didn't either, back then.

[ And he's the one who's been encouraging people to kill the Shadows and the Daitengu in the first place. It's just complicated because that was when he didn't remember anything of when he was in Rio's own shoes, of the Daitengu or anything. ]

If you get near a Shadow, their urge is to kill you too. Fighting back is normal, knowing they're a threat. It's not something you should beat yourself up over...

[toybombs]

[She shakes her head.]

It's not exactly that. I know that sometimes I have to fight to live. That's been most of my life.

[The adults who created them felt it was their responsibility to kill the children they had wrought.]

But it's a thin tightrope to walk. Killing only when it's necessary to live... But without overindulging it either, or else I'll just lose myself, and then my fears will become true.

[Her fear that she should have been killed while she was still herself than allowing her to become a devil.]

You said you're trying to change. That sort of thing takes time. That sort of thing you can't really help, unlike effort... and I know you're already giving it your all.

[ Having to be mindful of every little thing sounds exhausting. But Rio is always mindful of every little thing— she's had to be, with everything she's been through, he thinks. ]

Sometimes you slip, but other people can get you back on that tightrope. Remind you when you need it, and that sort of stuff. Like how Souji's always been there for me, getting me to stop when I go overboard.

[toybombs]

[She regards him for a moment before sighing again.]

Sort of... I guess...

There's some things that will never change because of the curse. And I don't have others with me here who understand it all.

[She has no one but herself to keep her in line.]

Sort of's better than nothing. Something as personal as this, even if people can't help, they can give support. Doesn't sound like much, but...

[ He shrugs. Sometimes people cheering you on lets you perform Nyx sealing miracles. ]

[toybombs]

...It might not be enough.

[And the degree to which she misses Ryoko and - yes, even Kousuke's dumb face - seems to grow by the day.]

--But there isn't much you can do to help with that. [She's just whining.]

Yeah... Not much I can do but listen to you and fail to help.

[ She came here worried that her main use here is her capability of violence and Minato's kind of sure now that his words had the opposite effect of calming those worries. ]
